Spring Cleaning: Less Is More

Sharing our thoughts on consumerism + spring cleaning

Sustainability is a core value of ours here at SAVVY. We do the basics: recycle, buy eco-products and use minimal energy. While also seeking to educate others of little changes that make a big impact on the environment. Today we wanted to share our thoughts on spring cleaning - a tradition for many that can also be eye-opening.

Spring cleaning is a great time to rid our homes + offices of the extra belongings no longer of use. Many like us, donate and when forced, throw out old items. Every year we find one or two or three items from our spring cleaning pile that could be classified as an unnecessary purchase made. These unnecessary purchases all have a carbon footprint associated as well. If you, like us, want to be an environmental warrior - let's work together to make smarter consumer purchases to reduce our impact on the earth.

Less is more:

Here is what we are donating + recycling from this years cleaning spree:

  • Old, unused plant pots
  • Colorful (seasonal) binders
  • Colorful (seasonal) binder dividers
  • Old picture frames
  • Extra, unused calendars (2016)
  • Extra, unused journals
  • 1 broken computer monitor
  • 1 broken, old laptop
  • A chair
  • Shelving unit

Our takeaway from the list, buy what you need, not what you want. Make a list when you go to a store and buy only items needed (and specified) on the list. Target is a black hole for us, the seasonal binders, dividers and extra calendars + journals were all unnecessary purchases from there (and they were bad for our wallets).

Eco-Products Rule

We live in a world filled with variety and options. We encourage reading what the products you purchase are made of in addition to the longevity of use. Organic, compostable, recycled, eco products are now more affordable and readily available than ever before. Around our office we purchase Seventh Generation products + buy recycled/organic products as often as we can.

How was your spring cleaning? Did you realize that you may have purchased a few too many unnecessary things? Check our your carbon footprint here or here + share your thoughts below.
